The Hamptons

A pop up restaurant and bar turning a concrete courtyard into a seaside fantasy with a sprinkling of maritime magic.

During the summer months of January 2013 until May in downtown Auckland the CBD is often quiet whilst the Tourist attractions struggle to cope with demand. In a once in a ‘city’ opportunity M&C proposed to several of the Cities premium landlords to construct a ‘pop up’ downtown City Restaurant in the heart of the CBD. On a delicate footprint M&C designed, constructed and funded a

‘Hamptons’ themed restaurant with food prepared by New Zealand’s number 1 restaurant. Partners into this venture included Peroni Beer and Pernod Ricard Wines. The venture has since been removed and the only legacy was a New Zealand hospitality award for best new restaurant Auckland 2014.

Rowbox

An interactive and engaging activation creating a virtual on water rowing experience using ground breaking digital technology.

With a bit of Kiwi ingenuity Mayo&Calder developed a retractable 20ft container which unfolds to reveal four rowing machines, programmed with a virtual World Champs race simulator set in Lake Karapiro. The concept goal was ‘to allow everyone to row in the World Championships’. The groundbreaking digital technology allows users to have a virtual rowing race along 250m of the lake with live event commentary. The unique ‘virtual on water’ experience is supplemented by interactive touch screen and video material promoting New Zealand, Hamilton and the Championships.

With the support of Tourism New Zealand and a host of enthusiastic sponsors, the RowBox spent the European summer of 2009 taking New Zealand and the 2010 World Rowing Championships to regattas in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, the UK and the USA. International rowers, officials and fans tried their luck on the ergs, marveled at the beauty of New Zealand and were rewarded with a DVD and a chance to win a trip to the 2010 World Rowing Championships, Karapiro.
